WAH YAN COLLEGE, HONG KONG (A Jesuit Secondary School)
Music Scholars 2017-2018
Music Scholars (2017-2018 Form 1 entrants)
Every year up to five Music Scholar titles are offered to Primary Six applicants who successfully pass an audition and interview conducted by the Music Department usually in December / January on condition that they can gain admission to the school to study Form 1 through normal procedures in March / April*.
Awardees of the Music Scholars Scheme shall benefit from the following:
- free tuition on one designated instrument (or more) during their time at Wah Yan;
- tongfai would be waived as long as the Music Scholar retain their title during their study in Wah Yan; and
- free entry fee to the annual Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.
In addition, they are on the honour list of Music Scholars, which is a much sought-after honour for musicians at Wah Yan.
Awards are made on the basis of audition and interview; there is no written paper. Candidates should be a competent performer in one musical instrument, Western or Chinese, preferably two, at least one at Grade 6 or higher of the Associated Board or any recognized examining organization although it is not necessary to have taken the examination. They should prepare two contrasting pieces for audition for each instrument. The audition is designed to discover signs of talent and interest as much as to test actual performance; the award is based more on potential than on actual attainment.
In return, the awardees are expected to promise to play an active role in rehearsals and performances arranged by the school when called upon by the Department. Further details are available from the Head of Music who will be pleased to discuss matters with prospective candidates and their parents.
*Being conferred the title of "Music Scholar" does not imply that a candidate has been given a Form 1 school place. However, it would be in his interest to mention the offer when attending a general school admission interview conducted by the school in March/April..
The deadline for applications is Monday, 19th December 2016.
