SYNOPSIS
Session A - The Jesuit Examen: Reflection and Growth (Cantonese)
Speaker:
Fr. Thomas LEUNG, S.J.
Synopsis:
Jesuit Examen is a self-reflection experience. For St. Ignatius, it is indeed a self-felt-knowledge life process. He discovers God’s work in his life: Freeing him from negative factors and issues, so that he can be freer in spirit to respond to God’s call.
Session B - Parenting: Accompanying Teenagers with Spiritual Conversation (Cantonese)
Speaker:
Miss Sally LAW
Synopsis:
Parenting is challenging. Often the challenges mounts to an apex during adolescence stage. The changes in adolescent development requires not only a change in the way of communication, in fact, the role and nature of parenting shifts from teaching and caring centered to a balance between companionship, which involves a balance between teaching, caring and life-giving conversation.
Life-giving conversation is properly named as Spiritual Conversation because the focus of the conversation trespasses behaviors, problems, or issues, and goes to the depth of life and personhood.
This workshop will focus on both the “doing”, i.e. methods and skills, as well as the “being” of spiritual conversation.
Session C - How Jesuit Education Responds to the Modern World of Hyper-competition (Cantonese)
Speakers:
Miss Patricia CHAN
Dr. Matthew CHU
Synopsis:
If you had finished the Math exam this morning and were to take the Physics exam tomorrow. What would you be studying this afternoon?
Most of us would probably review Physics.
Having taught at Wah Yan for over thirty years, a retired teacher shared an impressive experience of hers:
"In one afternoon, I saw a F.7 student studying Math at school. I knew that he had just taken the Math mock exam in the morning. However, he wasn't studying for his Physics exam tomorrow, but continued to study Math instead. I was curious and asked him why, he replied me with a smile, "Not to worry for me, teacher. I am studying Math now because I realized that I was confused about some Math concepts as I was working on the paper this morning. I want to learn from my mistakes. For the Physics exam tomorrow, I have finished studying."
After some years, I learnt that he furthered his studies at Harvard University and received a doctoral degree."
Confronted by the contemporary hyper-competition culture, how does Jesuit education nurture students for excellence without putting undue emphasis on competition like the rest? The two psychologists will share interesting stories of Wahyanites they have met while exploring the essence of Jesuit Education.
Session D - Jesuit Education as a Preparation for the Modern Workplace (Cantonese)
Speakers:
Dr. P.Y LEUNG
Dr. Y.L.SO
Synopsis:
Good education is not just about preparing students for academic excellence but also productive and meaningful lives after graduation. An important aspect of adult life is work. With the rapid transformations in the technological, industrial, economic as well as social environment in recent decades, has Jesuit education become more or less relevant in terms of developing qualities treasured in the modern workplace? Two Wahyanites with rich experience in leadership, HR management and development will share with the audience their valuable observations.
Session E - A Dialogue on Unity in Plurality (Cantonese / English*)
Speakers:
Professor Anthony B.L. CHEUNG
Mr. Kevin C.T. LAU
Synopsis:
It seems both in Hong Kong and elsewhere, we see more extreme divisions across social, economic, political, and religious lines. People with different views find it ever more difficult to come to a consensus or to work together. “Unity in plurality” that encompasses values such as respect, inclusiveness, humility is one of the hallmarks of Jesuit education. In this session, two alumni of Wah Yan with rich experience in dealing with extremely divisive social and political issues in Hong Kong will have a dialogue on this important topic.
*Simultaneous interpretation from Cantonese to English is available in this session.
